The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is a golf tournament of the European Tour , which was held in January 2006 for the first time. It is played at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club at Sheraton in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates .
The event arose as part of the expansion of the European Tour to Asia. It is part of the Desert Swing played in the Arab states on the Persian Gulf , which also includes the Dubai Desert Classic (founded in 1989) and the Qatar Masters (founded in 1998). The tournaments take place one after the other or with a short interruption in winter at the end of January and in February and traditionally follow the tournaments in South Africa .
Contrary to most of the European Tour events held in Asia, there is no cooperation with the Asian Tour for the tournament in Abu Dhabi . The prize money for the first five editions was $ 2 million each . As of 2019, it is one of the eight tournaments in the Rolex Series , the prize money is seven million US dollars.
