Michael Campbell CNZM (born February 23, 1969 in Hawera , New Zealand ) aka "Cambo", is a former New Zealand professional golfer .
Private
Michael's parents are Thomas (Tom) and Marie Campbell. He is of Māori descent, namely from the Ngāti-Ruanui tribe (on the father's side) and Ngā Rauru (on the mother's side). He has been married to Julie Campbell since January 1996 and has two sons: Thomas Christopher (* 1998) and Jordan Joseph (* 2000).
Career
In January 1993 he switched to the professional camp. His first tournament win was when he took part in a professional tournament for the fifth time: he won the Canon Challenge in Sydney with a lead of three strokes. He first stepped into the limelight in 1995 when he led the Open Championship after three rounds and finally came third. This was followed by several years of injuries and poor form before he was among the top hundred in the world again at the end of 1999. In 2005 he achieved the great coup by winning the US Open . He is the second New Zealander and the first Māori to win a major tournament after Bob Charles . In 2010 Campbell fell into a crisis that made him seriously consider ending his career that had culminated five years earlier with the victory over Tiger Woods.
In May 2015 he announced his retirement from the professional tournament scene.
