Beep Media Player (BMP) is a graphic, free audio player for Unix-like operating systems. Depending on the installed plugins, it can play all common audio formats. The application can also use the classic Winamp skins . It has a GTK + 2 based graphical user interface.
history
The project was split off in autumn 2003 by Milosz Derezynski (“deadchip”) from the GTK1-based XMMS ; Version 0.9.6 was released on December 24th. The player was renamed from Beep to Beep Media Player in order to avoid confusion with the Unix program Beep , which controls the internal system loudspeaker .
The development was discontinued in favor of a successor with the code name "BMPx". 95% of the BMPx was rewritten in C ++ and is based on version 2.8 of GTK +. The library GStreamer (≥0.10.4) is used as the backend . Compared to BMP, BMPx supports, among other things, D-Bus and its own media library for managing audio files .
With Audacious , another spin-off of the Beep Media Player was created, which continues the original concept.
