The X Multimedia System ( XMMS , notation: X MultiMedia System ) is a graphic, free audio player for Unix-like operating systems . The last version appeared in 2007.

XMMS plays MP3 , (Ogg) Vorbis , MOD , WAV , mp3PRO , MIDI and numerous other audio formats such as FLAC , similar to Winamp for Windows , depending on the installed plug-ins . You can also use Winamp 2 skins with XMMS. It is also possible to watch videos using the MPlayer plug-in (similar to Winamp 3).

There is also a version for the command line called noXMMS that has been freed from all graphic elements .

There is also an XMMS control API , xmmsctrl , which allows remote control of running XMMS sessions from other programs via C functions. However, there is no documentation on the control interface and must therefore be derived from the available source texts. There is also an XMMS control interface specifically for the KDE panel "Kicker" called xmms-kde , which allows XMMS to be controlled from the KDE panel.

Development started in 1997. XMMS was closed source when it was first developed and was called X11Amp . When PlayMedia Systems, Inc. registered trademark claims, it was renamed "X Multimedia System" / "XMMS" in 1999. The program is now subject to the GPL and is therefore free software.

XMMS2

Since the end of 2007, XMMS has not been further developed in favor of the successor XMMS2 . In addition to XMMS2, there are also the spin-offs BMPx and Audacious . XMMS2 is the second generation of the program. XMMS2 implements a client-server model and is equipped with a plug-in interface. It was developed from the ground up and does not build on XMMS1. The current version is 0.8 DrO_o. Where "DR" stands for Developer Release and is intended to signal that XMMS2 is not yet ready for the end user. However, it has already been included in some distributions, such as Debian .
