Audacious ( English for “kühn”) or Audacious Media Player (“kühner media player”) is a free audio player . The software is primarily developed for Unix-like operating systems , but from version 2.5 there is also a port for Windows .

Development history

The software was split off in 2005 by William "nenolod" Pitcock from version 0.9.7.1 of the Beep Media Player (BMP) , the development of which came to a standstill. BMP was again a spin-off of the X Multimedia Systems (XMMS), which was also no longer maintained by its developers, but is now being continued with XMMS2 in a new version. The Audacious development team could not come to terms with the priorities set for XMMS2 and therefore decided to develop their own audio player. The original motto was "to enable the highest quality audio reproduction, comparable to the Windows software foobar2000 , but with the appearance of Winamp ".

aims

The former standard Winamp-style interface.

Like its predecessors, Audacious was primarily based on the Winamp media player , which was widely used in the Windows world. The support for videos, which was added in later Winamp versions, is rejected by the developers, however, because they want to concentrate on a resource- saving audio player.

Audacious has several graphical user interfaces and can be run as a daemon . The classic variant was adopted by BMP and is ultimately a clone of Winamp, so that its "Classic Skins " are also supported. A newer interface was initially implemented with GTK + 3 and places less emphasis on design than on the range of functions. While the BMP surface was Audacious's standard for a long time, the developers focused on the GTK + variant from version 2.4.0. At the beginning of 2015 this was backported to version 2, because the development of version 3 of GTK + was dissatisfied. At the same time, a user interface written in Qt with version 3.6-beta1 was presented by Audacious, which is used as the standard for Mac OS X porting and is to generally replace the GTK + variant as the standard from version 4.0. With version 3.7, the classic BMP interface has also been rewritten in Qt.

With the release of version 4.0-beta1, the surface was implemented in the current version 5 of Qt. In the course of this, the developers announced that the GTK surface would in future be corrected in order to fix errors - but not to develop it further.

Technical

Audacious has a plug-in - interface that the program modular power. This comprises six plug-in categories:

transport
describes all methods of retrieving files, both locally and via network connections.
Playlist
includes parsers for different file formats to playlists .
input
includes codecs for decoding and places also transcoding of audio formats . Reference is made to the program libraries from FFmpeg resorted.
Visualization mode
includes plug-ins for audio visualization .
Effects
modify the sound of the audio material in real time during playback.
General
describes general functional expansions, e.g. OSD title display.

Many of the available plug-ins are offered in a separate package on the official website, the use of which is recommended. Since a large part of Audacious's range of functions is based on plug-ins that can be switched on or off, the user can adapt the program to his or her personal needs. The software is natively able to operate different sound architectures ( ALSA , PulseAudio , OSS , JACK ). Other typical functions such as streaming capability (for example Internet radio ), the creation of playlists or the subsequent fine-tuning of the sound using an equalizer are also available. Audacious can be found in the repositories of most Linux distributions .
