Transcoding

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transcoding is the process of converting one audio or video format to another.

The term recoding is used when the source and target format are identical and only properties of the media object are changed. For example, if the content of a video DVD (such as MPEG-2 ) is only reduced in resolution and frame rate to save storage space. The format of the media object remains the same.
