The QuickTime Player is a program for multimedia playback for Mac OS, OS X and Windows developed by Apple . It also acts as a streaming client for MPEG-4 , 3GPP , and QuickTime compatible live streaming content. Furthermore, the QuickTime Player makes screen, video and audio recordings possible. The player is part of a QuickTime installation. The player does not play the video or music files, but rather acts as a graphical user interface for QuickTime.

The application was originally designed to test Apple's QuickTime 1.0 and then became known as MoviePlayer. It was released as part of the QuickTime installation to offer a simple video player. Over time, the popularity and the areas of application increased. In 1999 it was released with QuickTime version 4.0, and the entire interface was redesigned. This gave the player a surface that looks similar to brushed aluminum.

In addition to the free QuickTime Player, there is QuickTime Pro , which, in addition to the functions of the player, has recording, editing, conversion and export functions for media processing.

Security flaws

The Department of Computer Security ( US-Cert ) of the US Department of Homeland Security advises users of Quicktime for Windows to uninstall the program from their computer as soon as possible. The reason for this are security gaps in the software, which can be used to gain control of the computer from outside. Apple has discontinued support for Quicktime for Windows, there will be no security update.
