3rd Generation Partnership Project

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3rd Generation Partnership Project ( 3GPP ) is a global cooperation of standardization bodies for standardization in mobile communications ; specifically for UMTS , GSM , LTE and 5G / NR . The 3GPP was founded on December 4th, 1998 by five so-called organizational partners .

partner

The project partners are:

  • ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses, Japan)
  • ETSI (European Telecommunication Standards Institute)
  • ATIS (formerly T1) ( Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions , USA)
  • TTA (Telecommunications Technology Association, Korea)
  • TTC (Telecommunications Technology Committee, Japan)

In the meantime there was also:

The majority of all mobile network operators, manufacturers and regulatory authorities worldwide are organized in 3GPP through these Organizational Partners.

Specifications

The aim of the standardization work is the creation of technical specifications (TS) that describe all aspects of mobile communications technology so precisely that the mobile devices of all manufacturers function correctly in all mobile communications networks.

The 3GPP is also involved in the standardization of the IP multimedia subsystem .

The specifications can be found in the FTP area on the 3GPP website (see below) and can be downloaded for free.

Technical bodies

The standardization work takes place in so-called TSGs (Technical Standardization Group). There are:

  • TSG SA (= Services and Architecture)
  • TSG CT (= Core Network & Terminals)
  • TSG RAN (= Radio Access Network)

Each TSG has several WGs (Working Groups) in which sub-areas of the TSG's tasks are dealt with.

Others

Independent of 3GPP, there is the 3GPP2 project , which is a cooperation between companies working on the CDMA2000 standard.

3GPP also specified a file format with the extension ". 3gp ". The HDX4 video codec is compatible with ".3gp" .
