3gp is the name for a video - file format for mobile devices such as mobile phones of the 3rd generation or PDAs . This format was specified by the 3GPP organization . Files in this format have the filename extension “ .3gp ” or “ .3gpp ”. It is used in the UMTS standard .
3g2 is a video file format for mobile phones that is functionally similar to the 3gp format. This format was specified by the 3GPP2 organization . Files in this format have the filename extension “ .3g2 ”. It is used in the CDMA2000 standard .
format
3gp is a container format that is largely based on MPEG-4 Part 12 . In addition to control information and the audio channel, the actual video data are contained within this container . The format allows two audio and three video codecs :
- Video: MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or H.264 , although H.264 does not work on all cell phones
- Audio: AMR , AMR-WB or AAC-LC
The MIME-type ( content-type ) of this file type is “video / 3gpp” (video and / or audio data) or “audio / 3gpp” (audio data only). Please note that a "video / 3gpp" file sent from a web server may contain audio data as well as audio and video data.
A conversion of 3gp files into other formats (and vice versa) can e.g. B. using the computer programs HDX4 , MEncoder , Pinnacle Studio or FFmpeg .
use
The format used is u. a. When recording your own video clips with the video function of the cell phone camera, with cell phone videos for downloading from a cell phone or mobile entertainment provider and for video content in multimedia messaging services ( MMS ). The resolutions 128 × 96, 176 × 144, 220 × 176, 320 × 240 pixels and a few other undocumented sizes are therefore mainly used as image sizes. It should be noted that the end device supports the size used. Not only the screen resolution is important for this, but also the ability of the built-in media player to handle the corresponding size. For this reason and the different support for the audio and video codecs mentioned above, a specified "3gp capability" of a terminal does not automatically mean that every 3gp video will also run on this device. Rather, the support of the codecs used and the associated parameters (such as resolution or bit rate) are decisive. However, automatic recognition systems at mobile phone providers or premium providers ensure that the correct format is provided without user intervention (handset recognition).
The format offers 3gp the possibility of regulating the transfer and time of use of the video files through a system similar to the DRM system on PCs. More details can be found in the specifications 3GPP TS 26.234 (up to Release 5) and 3GPP TS 26.244 (from Release 6).
Film data in 3gp format can be downloaded with the freely available open source players VLC media player or Parole - e.g. B. on the distribution Xubuntu - as well as with other free closed source players such as Quick Time and Real Player can be played directly. Other open source projects such as MPlayer or the video editing software Avidemux are also capable of doing this.
