Xubuntu is a Canonical Ltd. published derivative of the Ubuntu operating system and is maintained by a free community. Ubuntu is a free and free Linux distribution that descends from Debian . Xubuntu uses the Xfce - Desktop Environment , which is known for its stability and resource-saving way of working. Ubuntu, on the other hand, uses Gnome as its desktop environment .
The name of the distribution Ubuntu means something like "humanity" in Zulu and denotes an African philosophy . Xubuntu is a case word from Xfce and Ubuntu .
aims
The Xubuntu community is intended to be part of the larger Ubuntu community that supports the ideals of the Ubuntu philosophy. The software should be available free of charge; Software tools should be able to be used by people in their national language and despite all disabilities. The developers state the following principles of their work:
- Xubuntu should always remain free: There are no extra costs for paid versions. Everyone should be able to work on equal terms.
- Xubuntu should always exist in many language versions.
- Xubuntu should remain easy to use.
- Xubuntu should be continuously developed. A new version should be published every six months and supported for at least nine months.
- Xubuntu fully embraces the principles of open source software development and wants to encourage people to use, improve and distribute open source software.
Applications
Xubuntu offers its users pre-installed programs. However, the selection of standard programs differs compared to Ubuntu.
- AbiWord - word processor
- Catfish - desktop search
- Common Unix Printing System - printer management
- Evince - PDF reader
- Firefox - web browser
- GIMP - graphics program
- Gnumeric spreadsheet
- Leafpad - text editor
- Thunderbird - email client
- Parole - media player
- Pidgin - Instant Messenger
- Simple Scan - scanner accessories
- Thunar - file manager
- XChat - IRC
- Orage calendar
Xubuntu also uses the Ubuntu Software Center , through which all programs from the repositories provided by Ubuntu can be installed via a graphical user interface. Canonical tries to give the user an intuitive tool. This means that there is no need to learn any terminal commands.
Versions
Xubuntu was first officially released on June 1, 2006 alongside Ubuntu in version 6.06 Dapper Drake . The current version is 19.10, code-named Eoan Ermine , which was released in October 2019. At the moment, version 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver is also officially being updated. "LTS" in this context means Long Term Support : These versions are provided with updates and security-relevant changes for three years instead of the usual nine months.
Xubuntu 04/12 LTS
Xubuntu 12.04 was released in April 2012 and is an LTS version that is supported for a total of three years. This is in contrast to the LTS versions of Kubuntu and Ubuntu , which received a five-year support period.
The minimum system requirements are given as 512 MiB RAM and 5 GB free hard disk space.
Xubuntu 10/13
Xubuntu 13.10 was released in October 2013 and was supported until July 2014. Due to the size of the installation file of 1 GB, the operating system had to be installed from a USB stick or DVD. For this version, Gnumeric and GIMP have been included as preinstalled programs, and many errors in Catfish and Parole have been eliminated. The Greybird desktop theme has also been relaunched and new background images have been added. In addition, documentation has now also been supplied as part of the distribution.
The same system requirements apply for Xubuntu 13.10 as for version 12.04.
Xubuntu 04/14 LTS
Version 14.04, published in April 2014, will be supported and maintained for three years. The innovations include the use of Light Locker as a screen lock and the Whisker Menu as a start menu. On July 25, 2014 an update to version 14.04.1 was released. The second update 14.04.2 was published on February 19, 2015; the Linux kernel was updated from version 3.13 to 3.16. A third update was released on August 6, 2015. The kernel version was again raised to 3.19. A 4th update was released on February 18, 2016. The kernel version was again raised to 4.2 (like 15.10). The fifth and last update of the kernel will take place in August 2016.

criticism
Critics of Xubuntu complain that versions from Xubuntu 8.04 onwards have almost the same memory requirements as Ubuntu with Gnome or KDE . In a test carried out by Distrowatch , it was found that Xubuntu 9.04 uses twice as much system memory as Debian 5.0.1 with XFCE and that it used ten times as much memory when the desktop environment was loaded. Distrowatch attributes this to the use of applications from the Gnome desktop environment such as the graphical package manager, the network manager and the power management. It was therefore concluded that the standard selection of packages did not necessarily match a low-memory system. The Linux Magazine came to a similar conclusion and pointed out that Xubuntu something used more memory than Ubuntu, and therefore recommended for older systems the Ubuntu variant Lubuntu with LXDE as desktop environment . The distributors recommend the same system requirements for Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The authors of ubuntuusers.de refer to the alternative of installing a stripped-down version of Xubuntu with a minimal installation.
