List of Linux distributions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Linux mascot Tux

This list of Linux distributions contains a selection of Linux distributions arranged alphabetically by derivatives . A brief description only gives the most important unique selling points. More information, such as distribution, versions, languages or licensing for the individual distributions can be found in the respective main article.

A Linux distribution is a compilation of software based on the Linux kernel . There are separate distribution lists for other Unix operating systems such as BSD or Solaris . Since numerous insignificant derivatives and new compositions of well-known distributions are founded again and again, only established distributions are mentioned here. Different editions of the same distribution - for example with a different installation procedure, a different desktop environment or optimization for different hardware - are only mentioned once, even if they have a different name. In distributions that have “Linux” as an addition to the name, this is omitted.

Arch derivatives

Arch derivatives

Arch is a Linux distribution with rolling releases ; That is, releases correspond to the current status of the package archives. Since the development team follows the KISS principle (“ keep it simple, stupid ”) and the distribution thus dispenses with graphical setup tools, Arch is more likely to be found among advanced Linux users. Some Arch derivatives offer a graphical installation and user interface and are therefore also suitable for beginners. Most Arch derivatives use pacman as their package management software.

Ubuntu is a Debian derivative that has been optimized for home computers. Proprietary drivers can be installed in Ubuntu. In the end, all of these new compositions are based on a different selection of the packages contained in the initial installation. The base system, installation program and repositories , however, are identical. It is therefore also possible to expand a distribution by installing it afterwards to include the functionality of another new combination. In addition, there are various, in some cases very special, variants that Canonical Ltd. published and often referred to as " unofficial Ubuntu derivatives ". The Ubuntu recompositions published by the Ubuntu developers can be found in the main article.
