Turbolinux is a Japanese software company and Linux distribution .

Company history

In 1992 Jeff "Cliff" Miller and his wife Iris founded Pacific HiTech in California . The company's focus was mainly on the Asian market, first in Japan , then the People's Republic of China and South Korea . The company was renamed Turbolinux in 1999 .

At the height of the dot-com bubble , the company had many investors and therefore has a very eventful history. In 2000 alone, a total of $ 87 million in venture capital flowed into the operation; among other things, it expanded to Europe and opened numerous branches worldwide. A listing on the stock exchange seemed to be imminent.

Most of the branches were closed again within a year. Frequent changes in management went hand in hand with different company strategies, which tended to harm rather than help. The founders Jeff and Iris Miller left the company in 2000. Turbolinux also withdrew from Germany and Europe . In the summer of 2001, a merger with the already ailing service provider Linuxcare seemed imminent. However, this failed at the last moment. In 2002 Turbolinux was taken over by SRA. SRA ( Software Research Associates ) has been a system house since 1967 with strong connections to free software. One of the best-known employees at Turbolinux is the PostgreSQL core developer Tatsuo Ishii. Turbolinux is still one of the most popular Linux distributions , especially in South Asia (China, Japan).

Turbolinux became known in Germany through United Linux , a participation in the alliance of SuSE , Conectiva and Caldera .
