Conectiva

Conectiva was a company and a Linux distribution of the same name . After a merger with the French company Mandrake in 2005, the new joint company was called Mandriva .

Company history

Conectiva was founded on August 28, 1995 by Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo. It is based in Curitiba , Paraná ( Brazil ). Further offices are located in Manaus and São Paulo . The company currently employs around 60 people.

In the financial year 2004 the company was able to generate a turnover of 1.7 million euros and, according to its own information, reached the breakeven point during the second half of the year . Initiated the better known of Conectiva and financed software projects include the adaptation of APT to use RPM - packages and the Smart Package Manager . The Linux distribution was developed on the basis of Red Hat Linux and is common in Latin America . Conectiva became known in Germany when it joined United Linux .

On February 24, 2005 it was announced that Conectiva was bought by the French Linux distributor Mandrake for 1.79 million euros. A new name was also found through this merger: Mandriva . The main objective of the takeover was to expand the area of ​​research and development. Conectiva thus loses the status of its own distribution and can be regarded as discontinued.

Products

The "Crystal" icons for KDE , which were designed by Conectiva employee Esveraldo Coelho, and the "apt4rpm" port of the Debian GNU / Linux package management , were developed by Conectiva. Conectiva also developed the Synaptic graphical user interface . Conectiva employed u. a. Rik van Riel and the kernel maintainer Marcelo Tosatti .

Conectiva was a Linux distribution for the Latin American market. They developed a range of products and additional services aimed at meeting the demand for open source tools such as literature, manuals, additional software such as Linux add-ons and embedded systems , OEM programs, and the “Revista do Linux “(Linux Magazine). Conectiva also offered advice, training and technical support throughout Latin America through its own service centers and certified partners.

Conectiva also developed in the area of ​​the Linux kernel, the high availability of Linux and in the area of ​​drivers. Also: XFree86 , network protocols, firewall , Linux clusters , performance analysis and optimization, file and resource management. Since its foundation, Conectiva has developed solutions for the corporate sector and now has a wide range of products, including software for ATMs and cash registers in financial institutions, infrastructural solutions for public clients and a complete Linux range that was sold by large retail chains in Brazil .
