application

The Package Manager allows users to install, update or uninstall software packages. This interface provides for first selecting the packages and the operations on them. After an automatic dependency check and identification of conflicts in packages with identical functions, the changes can be made.

history

The development of Synaptic was financed by Conectiva and had employed their colleague Alfredo Kojima to program a graphical user interface for the APT, which was continued with the creation of apt-rpm , an interface that enables APT to use the RPM Package Manager . Synaptic uses the GTK + GUI toolkit .

With the Debian-based Linux distribution Ubuntu , Synaptic from version 11.10 is no longer installed by default, but can be installed later.

Forks

Although Debian uses the Gnome desktop environment by default , Synaptic can be operated in the K Desktop Environment (KDE). Kynaptic was a discontinued fork by Synaptic for KDE, its successor is Adept and its successor was K PackageKit .
