PackageKit was free software that provided a general interface for different package administrations . It used PolicyKit to check permissions.

history

In 2007 Richard Hughes started developing the PackageKit and featured it on his blog. Now it is being developed further by a small team. Fedora 9 and Foresight Linux 1.4.1 already use PackageKit by default. As the first dpkg -based distribution, Kubuntu from version 9.04 (“Jaunty Jackalope”) relies on PackageKit instead of Adept .

On February 14, 2019, Richard Hughes declared the project over.

design

The daemon packagekitdprovided a D-Bus interface for package management. Programs could also libpackagekitcommunicate with PackageKit via the library .

Many common package administrations could be used as backends. Frontends for GNOME ( GNOME software ) and KDE ( Apper ) were offered.

Command not found

From version 0.4.0, PackageKit contained a Bash extension similar to the Debian program command-not-found. If a command could not be found in the system but could be installed, the user was asked whether he would like to install it. Typing errors were also detected.
