Aptosid [ aptozɪt ] ( own spelling aptosid , known until September 2010 under the name Sidux [ ziːdʊks ], own spelling sidux ) was a non-commercial Linux distribution for desktop computers and notebooks based on Debian unstable .
It is available as a live CD for the i686 and AMD64 architectures and can be installed using a graphical installation wizard. Distribution is highlighted in the trade press mainly because of its topicality. In addition to the complete version, which includes all components, there is a "light" version with a reduced package size. Aptosid's standard desktop environment is KDE .
features
When developing Aptosid, particular emphasis is placed on hardware detection and system speed. The distribution is fully compatible with Debian / unstable "sid", so that all packages in the Debian repository can be used. Due to the optimization to i686 and alignment to current hardware (AMD from K7 , VIA from C7 ), use with older processors (for example up to AMD K6 or VIA C3 ) is not easily possible, as these do not fully support the instruction set .
Aptosid only contains DFSG- compliant open source software. Aptosid provides scripts and meta-packages for the bundled installation of the required software or non-free packages for various application areas. The Aptosid Live CD contains the languages English and German; further language packs can be installed later. However, the DVD includes all supported languages.
Due to the coupling to Debian / unstable, the distribution is always up to date; this is also referred to as a rolling release ; however, this is partly at the expense of stability. The Live CD is a snapshot of the current status of Aptosid at the time of publication of the current edition (except for the LiveCD-specific elements such as the installer ). Aptosid uses the apt tool to update the system . The independent script smxi , which originally came from Kanotix and can be integrated into Sidux via a so-called "stub installer" up to release 2008-01 , which excludes defective packages in Debian / unstable from the installation by means of a blacklist , is not part of the distribution.
Surname
The name component sid refers to the technical origin "Sid" ("still in development"), as Debian / unstable is called internally. Sidux followed the tradition of other Unix derivatives with its extension to ux . On the one hand, Aptosid thematizes apt as the name of the Debian package management used to carry out the rolling release . Further intended interpretations come from the Latin expression apto from aptus = suitable (made) , as well as the Greek expression απ'το ( ap'to ) = (coming) from . The names of the individual published versions are borrowed from Greek mythology and are supplemented by the year and an annual version number.
history
Sidux continued the former conception of Kanotix and emerged from this distribution after its developer Jörg Schirottke turned away from a more commercially oriented line for the sake of Debian / unstable as the basis. Sidux took over the previous function of Kanotix within the Linux distributions and was the only distribution that is based directly and exclusively on Debian's development branch "Sid". This tradition still applies to Aptosid. Sidux was founded on November 24th, 2006 by former Kanotix developers.
Since November 26, 2006, long before Sidux was released as a burnable ISO image for CD and DVD, it could be installed as a working operating system on the PC by updating a previous Kanotix installation via script with sources from the Sidux repository . The first Sidux Live CD with the name "Χάος" (chaos) and the name 2007-01 was officially released on February 22, 2007.
In February 2007, Sidux was recognized by Distrowatch for a donation of $ 350.
In the following months, Sidux was repeatedly the subject of tests by Linux special issues of PC magazines, such as a test in December 2007 by the Chip , in which the compromise between topicality and stability is explained. The PC world Linux 2/2008 includes Sidux along with various other Linux distributions on DVD. Linux Life , an offshoot of PC Magazin , also has a report in issue 02/08.
Sidux has been an SPI affiliate since December 9, 2009 .
After a dispute between Sidux eV and the developers, a general meeting on August 14, 2010 decided to separate the development and the association. The development team continues to develop the distribution independently. In order to avoid trademark disputes between the development team and the association, the distribution was renamed Aptosid. After almost a month of revision time, Aptosid was released on September 11, 2010.
Because of differences in dealing with the user community a was formed in the summer of 2011 Fork aptosid, which siduction calls. This also remains a derivative of Debian Sid, but would like to involve the end user more closely in the development than aptosid does.
Sidux e. V.
To support and finance the distribution, the non-profit association “Sidux e. V. ”based in Berlin. The statutes of the association define the goals that go beyond the exclusive promotion and dissemination of Sidux. After separating the association and the developer community , the association plans to generally promote free software in the future.
Previous publications
Up until 2010, a new version was published as planned about every three months. There were usually 4 different CDs per version, but for reasons of space, a fully equipped DVD and two CDs are offered from version 2007-04.5 onwards. Since 2011 there is no longer a schedule for new versions. An updated version has at least been published annually since then. No new version has been released since 2013, so this distribution does not seem to be further developed.

Derivatives
As with many Linux distributions, there are also variations of Sidux. In this case, these are mainly versions with a different localization, on the one hand celtux with an Irish (Gaelic) localization, on the other hand Deb-on-Air with a French one.
Seminarix
Another derivative is Seminarix , which was still based on Kubuntu in version 1.0 , but has been based on Sidux since sidux-2008.1-seminarix for speed reasons. This distribution was developed by the Neuss study seminar for teacher training at secondary level I and II and specially adapted to the requirements in the educational sector. In contrast to Edubuntu , the operating system was not "belittled". The focus was on creating a good mix between learning software for all subjects with important office and graphics software. Sidux-Seminarix also supports older hardware in a special version (for example processors with instruction sets prior to i686).
