Pontus (mythology)
Pontus ( Greek Πόντος , the sea ) was an ancient sea deity in Greek mythology , the son of Gaia .
Pontus is counted among the Protogonoi , the first born. This makes him a pre-Olympic god. According to Hesiod , Gaia, the earth, gave birth to him “without fertile love”. According to other sources, he was the son of Gaia and Aether . With Gaia he begat Nereus , Thaumas , Phorkys , Keto and Eurybia and the Telchines . With Thalassa he became the father of fish. In addition, his granddaughter was Amphitrite , the wife of Poseidon .
