DistroWatch
DistroWatch has been a website that has been active since May 31, 2001, offering general information, news and a popularity ranking on various Linux distributions as well as other free or open source operating systems such as OpenSolaris or BSD .
DistroWatch lists in detail the version differences between individual distributions and the packages they contain. Information about the processor architecture and the file system as well as the price are also displayed. The Top Ten Distributions page is also intended to provide a detailed overview of today's leading distributions.

The page hit ranking (Page Hit Ranking) of DistroWatch is considered " the best, barometer 'on Linux distributions on the internet " and is often quoted when it comes to the popularity of individual distributions. However, Distrowatch's rating system is also vulnerable to scams, and some manufacturers have been accused of at least trying to do so. The founder of the site, Ladislav Bodnar, is also aware of this:
"I'd like to believe that there is some truth in the figures, but in all honesty, they really don't mean all that much and should not be taken very seriously."
"I would like to believe that there is some truth in the numbers, but honestly, they are not that meaningful and should not be taken that seriously."
The numbers are determined via the accesses to the description pages of the distributions. These and other, more detailed distribution rankings and statistics can be found on the sub-pages of DistroWatch (see web links ).
Package list
DistroWatch determines whether and, if so, in which version a software is contained in a distribution and thus enables the distributions to be compared with one another. The same rules apply to all listed systems; for example, the OpenBSD Distrowatch page also specifies whether the Linux kernel is included.
