Distrochooser is a web service that makes it easier to choose a Linux distribution . This is intended for beginners as many distributions with different aspects have emerged over the years.

functionality

Based on questions on various topics (knowledge of the user, operating systems already in use, area of application of the system, stability, user friendliness), the right distribution for the user is determined. Should no distribution completely match the questions answered by the user (absolute mode), the relative mode is used to determine the system that has a high likely match with the user's needs.

history

On May 24th, 2014 the first version of the distro chooser went online. The selection guide has been available as open source since June 19, 2014 . According to the associated blog, the 10,000 test mark was exceeded on February 10, 2015. Since April 18, 2015, version 2 of the selection guide has replaced the previous one.

On July 1, 2016, the distro chooser reached 100,000 tests. With the achievement of this test quantity, the development of a new software version was announced, which went into operation on April 14, 2017.

The selection is currently limited to distributions with a greater degree of distribution (e.g. Arch Linux , Debian , Gentoo Linux , Kubuntu , openSUSE , Ubuntu ), so distributions with a low degree of distribution are not considered.

The web service has also been available in Chinese since March 30, 2018.
