Parted Magic is a Live - Linux distribution with the aim of recordable data storage such as hard disk drives or solid-state drives (SSD) to offer a solution management. In doing so, attempts can be made to restore existing data stocks as part of data recovery or to manipulate them independently. Furthermore, existing data can be backed up and restored in the form of complete partition mapping, and the option of secure data destruction is offered, so that deleted data can no longer be retrieved with special forensic tools.
In addition to a complete Linux environment, the system also offers a compilation of various programs. Among other things, the partitioning program GNU Parted for partition manipulation, Clonezilla for backing up and restoring complete data stores, and tools such as Erase Disk for secure data deletion.
Details
Parted Magic is available as a direct start system for the storage media CD and USB stick , as well as in PXE format up to version 2019_12_24 and loads completely into the main memory during the start process . At least 1 GB of RAM is required for operation (512 MB as a direct system).
Range of functions
In addition to GNU Parted and the GParted based on it , Parted Magic also offers the following programs to examine hard drives for errors and, if possible, to fix them:
- Partimage , its successor FSArchiver including GUI ( qt4-fsarchiver ) and Clonezilla - is used to backup and restore hard disks and partitions
- smartmontools including GUI ( GSmartControl ) - Checks and detects possible defects in hard drives via SMART
- TestDisk - Checks and restores deleted partitions and data
- Its own simple GUI for the secure deletion of partitions, entire hard drives or the MBR - uses dd , shred and nwipe , among others
- NTFS-3G - driver for write and read access to the NTFS file system of Microsoft Windows .
- Numerous fdisk programs (partitioning programs)
The distribution uses the desktop environment LXDE and offers the programs common in many today's operating systems such as PDF viewer ( Evince ), image viewer ( Mirage ), packer programs ( File Roller ), music player ( Audacious ), burning programs ( Xfburn ), CD Ripper ( Asunder ) and the printing system CUPS . There are also some Internet programs such as an IRC client ( XChat ) and the Firefox web browser with reloadable Flash and Java as well as the free virus scanner ClamAV with the graphical user interface ClamTk. A simple GUI allows you to save your settings for future sessions. Installation on a hard drive is also possible.
License & price
Parted Magic is published under the GNU General Public License and is therefore Free Software .
In the past, Parted Magic could be downloaded free of charge from the project's website. However, since the beginning of August 2013 (from version 2013_08_01) a fee has been charged for purchasing Parted Magic via a paywall on the project website. The pricing model provides for various tariffs and ranges from USD 9.99 for a one-time download of the CD image, to USD 12.99 for receiving Parted Magic on CD or from USD 17.99 on a USB stick 49.99 USD for an annual subscription, which legitimizes unlimited downloads of all published versions including the weekly builds.
The Parted Magic source code can still be downloaded for free. The background for setting up the paywall was the unemployment of the programmer and his wife.
Others
The author says he donates a certain amount to other free software and open source projects that are included in Parted Magic. Donations were $ 3,000 in 2013 and $ 2,500 in 2014.
