SystemRescueCd (from English for System Rescue CD ) is an Arch Linux- based Linux distribution that can be used as a live system directly e.g. B. can be started from a CD or a USB stick . It was designed as a small rescue system (bootable emergency system) to repair a non-bootable operating system and to restore data.

Range of functions

The SystemRescueCd project started in France was originally based on the Gentoo Live CD and contained a number of useful system tools (see below) and basic applications (browser, editor, midnight commander, network tools). In addition to the console, there was also an X Window System with the window manager Xfce4 (up to version 1.1.7 JWM , before that GNU Window Maker ).

The distribution offers simple options to carry out administration tasks such as creating or changing partitions. Many system programs and simple tools are included. Furthermore, the most important file systems ( ext2 / ext3 / ext4 , Btrfs , ReiserFS , Reiser4 , XFS , JFS , VFAT , NTFS , iso9660 ) and network systems ( Samba , NFS ) are supported.

Up to version 5, SystemRescueCd was based on Gentoo Linux . From version 6.0 Arch Linux is used as the basis and an x64 system is required, 32-bit x86 systems are no longer supported.

Tools included

  • GNU Parted : Editing of partitions and file systems
  • Partimage : Save and restore partition images
  • File system tools (e2fsprogs, reiserfsprogs, reiser4progs, xfsprogs, jfsutils, ntfsprogs, dosfstools): formatting, resizing and debugging of existing partitions
  • NTFS-3G : read / write access to MS Windows NTFS partitions
  • sfdisk : save and restore the partition table
  • TestDisk : Testing and “undoing” partitions
  • Network tools (Samba, NFS, ping, nslookup ...)
