Partimage is a program memory maps ( english Images ) of disk partitions to an image file in backup or restore it. Partimage is available as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Summed up over all versions, it has already been downloaded more than 545,000 times from the official server, and it is standard in many Linux distributions.

features

Partimage offers the possibility of backing up or restoring partitions over a computer network to other computers such as a server or on a network attached storage (NAS), provided a partimaged server is available there. Images of partitions to be backed up can either be backed up directly or compressed using various methods. As in regular operation embedded partitions such as the so-called "root partition" can not be saved in operating normally, Part Image is also available in the form of a rescue CD ( English SystemRescueCD ) are available. The system to be backed up is booted from the rescue CD and thus allows any partitions to be backed up or restored regardless of the functional status of the system.

Partimage divides image files into files smaller than 2 GB by default, since various older file systems such as FAT16 do not allow files larger than 2 GB, but this setting can be used, for example, for CD-R (650 or 700 MB) or for more modern file systems with higher limits , to change. Partimage also has a progress indicator that shows all relevant data for the user, such as the size of the image file to be backed up, the available storage space on the target medium or the elapsed and remaining time.

The ext4 file system, standard in Debian and distributions derived from it such as Ubuntu , is not supported like ReiserFS-4 . Furthermore, it is not possible to extract individual files from the hard disk images without completely unpacking the image.
