Princess Karoline of Hessen-Homburg, later Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt

Karoline Louise von Hessen-Homburg (born August 26, 1771 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , † June 20, 1854 in Rudolstadt ) was the regent of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

Life

Karoline was the daughter of Landgrave Friedrich V von Hessen-Homburg and his wife Karoline von Hessen-Darmstadt . Their formal training was simple and thorough, with pious upbringing being followed. On July 21, 1791, she married Prince Ludwig Friedrich II of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt from the House of Schwarzburg in Homburg . Karoline was highly educated and had a considerable influence on the artistic life of the residence.

Before the battle near Saalfeld , Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia spent the evening before with the princely family. The princess reports on his last evening in her diary. With the death of her husband in 1807, she became regent for her underage son Friedrich Günther . The principality joined the Rhine Confederation shortly before the beginning of Caroline's reign . After coming of age in 1814, her son showed interests other than government affairs. Even during his reign, Karoline had a strong influence on government decisions in the country, which received a constitution in 1816 and joined the German Customs Union in 1835 .

Significant events in her reign were the establishment of an educational institution by Friedrich Fröbel in Keilhau , as well as the establishment of a kindergarten in 1840 by him in Blankenburg . Karoline Luise was acquainted with Goethe , Schiller and Wilhelm von Humboldt and was in lively correspondence. The latter called her a "woman who is seldom found". She left behind a considerable collection of her own drawings and watercolors, which are of high artistic quality and bear witness to her romantic approach to nature. Numerous watercolors show the landscape park around Homburg Castle . There are also sketches of their travels and hikes.

Karoline died on June 20, 1854 in Rudolstadt.
