Life

Caroline (full name: Caroline Amalie Elisabeth Auguste Friederike Ludowike Christiane Josephine Leopoldine George Bernhardine Wilhelmine Woldemare Charlotte) was the daughter of Landgrave Gustav von Hessen-Homburg and his wife Luise von Anhalt-Dessau . She married Prince Heinrich XX in Homburg on October 1, 1839 . Reuss to Greiz .

Caroline ruled over her son from 1859 to 1867 after her husband's death . As the daughter of an Austrian general, she was anti-Prussian, but many Russians had also been in the Habsburg service. In the German War , she turned against Prussia, whereupon Greiz was occupied by Prussian troops. The fact that their country was spared the fate of Hanover is thanks to Carl Alexander von Sachsen-Weimar , who personally campaigned for the Russians with his brother-in-law Wilhelm I. Caroline had to resign before her son came of age, and half of the war contributions were paid from her private assets.
