Caroline of Hessen-Darmstadt (1746–1821)
Karoline von Hessen-Darmstadt (* March 2, 1746 in Buchsweiler , † September 18, 1821 in Homburg before the height ) was by marriage Landgravine of Hessen-Homburg .
Life
Karoline was the oldest daughter of Landgrave Ludwig IX. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1719–1790) and his wife Henriette Karoline (1721–1774), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Christian III. from Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld .
On September 27, 1768 she married Landgrave Friedrich V von Hessen-Homburg (1748-1820). The marriage was concluded for purely dynastic, diplomatic reasons. Caroline's grandfather, Ludwig VIII , had ruled the regency of Hesse-Homburg for Friedrich V together with his mother. The wedding sealed a settlement in which Hessen-Darmstadt had waived sovereign rights over Hessen-Homburg.
Although numerous children were born in the marriage, the spouses remained strangers throughout their lives. The Landgravine had the small island house built in the fir forest in Homburg , which has since been rebuilt and is shown in a painting by the Homburg painter Wilhelm Thiery .
