Location of Bruchem in the municipality of Zaltbommel |
Bruchem is a village in the Bommelerwaard region and part of the municipality of Zaltbommel in the Dutch province of Gelderland . Bruchem has 1,785 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Until 1999 Bruchem was part of the municipality of Kerkwijk , which was incorporated into Zaltbommel in 1999.
The name Bruchem has two parts: bruc and hem . Bruc (nnl. Broek) corresponds to the German Bruch or Bruchwald and describes a swampy piece of forest. Hem is derived from heim and, as in German, designates a 'living space'.
Bruchem is built on the raised ridge or edge of a river bank (nl. Stroomrug) that runs through the middle of the Bommelerwaard and on which Kerkwijk and Delwijnen are also located. This raised ridge was created along the river 'de Alm', which silted up in the Bommelerwaard before 1200.
Worth seeing is the reformed church (nl. Herrormde kerk), probably from the 13th century, with a choir probably built in the 14th century . The church was expanded in 2005/2006 from around 250 to around 400 seats.
