Auguste Friederike von Hessen-Homburg (born November 28, 1776 in Homburg vor der Höhe , † April 1, 1871 in Ludwigslust ) was a princess of Hessen-Homburg and, by marriage, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Life

Auguste was a daughter of Landgrave Friedrich V (Hesse-Homburg) (1748–1820) from his marriage to Karoline (1746–1821), daughter of Landgrave Ludwig IX. from Hessen-Darmstadt . After her sisters had left their parents' house at an early stage, Auguste took care of her ailing father.

She married Grand Duke Friedrich Ludwig zu Mecklenburg on April 3, 1818 in Homburg . At that time, Friedrich Ludwig was already a widower twice and the father of four children, to whom Auguste became a caring stepmother and whose upbringing was up to her, especially after the death of her husband only 18 months after the marriage. Her marriage to Friedrich Ludwig had remained childless.

She developed a particularly close relationship with her stepdaughter Helene , whose mother Karoline had suggested her cousin Auguste be her husband's successor while she was still on her deathbed.

Auguste was buried in the Helenen-Paulownen-Mausoleum in the Ludwigslust Palace Park.
