Karoline Luise von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (* July 18, 1786 in Weimar , † January 20, 1816 in Ludwigslust ) was a princess of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach and by marriage Hereditary Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Life

Karoline was the only surviving daughter of Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1757–1828) from his marriage to Luise (1757–1830), daughter of Landgrave Ludwig IX. from Hessen-Darmstadt . The princess was brought up carefully. Henriette von Knebel was responsible for her upbringing , while Johann Gottfried Herder took over her religious education . In 1807, Goethe dedicated the “Little Travel, Amusement and Consolation Book” to her with 88 landscapes from his hand and composed the lodge song “On the desolate beach of life” on her early death.

On July 1, 1810, Karoline married the later Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Ludwig von Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Weimar , who already had two children from his previous marriage. Friedrich Ludwig dedicated his father's guest house in Ludwigslust to his wife. It was renamed the Hotel de Weimar.

Karoline was in lively correspondence with almost all of Weimar's great intellectuals, especially Charlotte von Lengefeld . She died at the age of 29, in poor health after the birth of her third child, and on her deathbed recommended her husband to replace her with her cousin Auguste von Homburg after her death .

Karoline was buried in the Helenen-Paulownen-Mausoleum in the Ludwigslust Palace Park.

From their marriage, Karoline had the following children:
