The 1988 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 11th at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the twelfth race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship . The winner was Gerhard Berger ( Ferrari ) ahead of Michele Alboreto (Ferrari) and Eddie Cheever ( Arrows-Megatron ).
This Grand Prix was the only one in the 1988 season that was not won by the McLaren duo Prost / Senna . The Ferrari double victory just a month after the death of company founder Enzo Ferrari was particularly emotional for the team and the Italian Tifosi .
Reports
background
After the Belgian Grand Prix , Ayrton Senna led the drivers' standings with 3 points ahead of Alain Prost and 47 points ahead of Gerhard Berger . McLaren-Honda led the constructors' championship with 103 points ahead of Ferrari and with 125 points ahead of Benetton-Ford .
Philippe Streiff contested his 50th Grand Prix at the Italian Grand Prix.
With Nelson Piquet (three times), Prost (twice), René Arnoux (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
At Williams-Judd , Jean-Louis Schlesser took over the cockpit from Martin Brundle . One race before, Brundle represented the actual regular driver Nigel Mansell , who was not yet ready for action after suffering from chickenpox . Schlesser had never competed in a Grand Prix before and never took part in any other racing weekend.
training
In Friday's free practice session, Senna posted the fastest lap ahead of Prost and Michele Alboreto . In Saturday practice, the McLaren drivers remained in the lead. Ferrari driver Berger was almost three seconds behind Senna in third place.
Qualifying
Oscar Larrauri ( EuroBrun-Ford ) was eliminated in the pre-qualification on Friday, which was attended by five drivers . In qualifying on Friday, Senna set the fastest lap ahead of Prost and Alboreto. In the second part of qualifying on Saturday, Senna kept the lead ahead of Prost and Berger.
The qualification training ended like many others this season with a first row for McLaren-Honda and the pole position for Ayrton Senna. It was the 10th of the season for the Brazilian. This is followed by the two Ferraris led by Berger.
Jonathan Palmer ( Tyrrell-Ford ), Stefan Johansson ( Ligier-Judd ), Gabriele Tarquini ( Coloni-Cosworth ) and Stefano Modena (EuroBrun-Ford) did not qualify .
Warm up
In the warm-up, Senna achieved another best time this weekend ahead of Prost and Alboreto.
run
Alessandro Nannini stopped at the pre-start and had to start the race just under one lap behind. The start of the race itself was uneventful, Prost took the lead briefly, but was overtaken by Senna again before the first corner. The reigning world champion Piquet fell out on lap eleven after a spin in eighth position.
The two McLaren dominated the race until well after half-time, while some cars that had been behind had technical defects. From lap 30 on, Prost slowed down, fell behind Berger and finally had to give up in the pits with engine failure. Towards the end of the race, the front pushed back together, especially Senna slowed down. Two laps before the checkered flag, the decisive scene occurred: Senna collided with Schlesser while lapping the first chicane and retired. Gerhard Berger took the lead to the cheers of the Italian fans and defended it against Alboreto to the finish. It was the first win for Ferrari this season in which every race had previously been won by a McLaren driver.
There was no change in the fight for the drivers' championship due to the failure of Senna and Prost.
After the race
During the technical inspection after the race, the victorious Ferrari No. 28 initially failed several times. The tank was gauged three times and the measurement result was above the permissible limit of 150 liters in each case. It was not until the fourth inspection that the commissioners found a tank size of 149.5 liters.
