The 2008 Italian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2008 ) took place on September 14th at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza and was the fourteenth race of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the Belgian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' championship two points ahead of Felipe Massa and 18 points ahead of Robert Kubica . Ferrari led the constructors' championship by twelve points over McLaren-Mercedes and 24 points over BMW Sauber .

With Rubens Barrichello (twice), David Coulthard and Fernando Alonso (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Adrian Sutil set the fastest time in the first free practice, followed by Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella . Kimi Raikkonen finished the second free practice as the fastest. He was followed by Kubica and Nick Heidfeld . In the third free practice, three Germans drove the fastest times. Timo Glock secured the fastest time ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg .

qualification

Heikki Kovalainen set the best lap time in the first qualifying stage . The two Honda drivers, as well as Piquet Jr., Nakajima and Sutil were eliminated. Sebastian Vettel took the lead in the second segment. Hamilton, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Fisichella and Kubica were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel again set the fastest time and secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. Kovalainen and Webber placed themselves behind Vettel. At the age of 21 years and 72 days, he became the youngest driver to have achieved pole position.

Vettel won the race ahead of Kovalainen and Kubica and became the youngest Grand Prix winner to date at the age of 21 years and 73 days.

The remaining points were placed by Alonso ahead of Heidfeld, Massa, Hamilton and Webber.
