The 1981 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 13th at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and was the 13th race of the 1981 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann started as leaders in the World Championship drivers' standings for the 13th round of the World Championship, which was held again on the traditional Monza circuit after a year of interruption in which the Italian Grand Prix was held in Imola . Alain Prost was also given realistic chances for the world title.

There have been no changes in the field of drivers since the Dutch Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

René Arnoux gave his Renault team the sixth pole position in a row. For himself it was the fourth of the year. Carlos Reutemann prevented the fact that both Renault drivers did not occupy the front row for the fifth time in a row by displacing Alain Prost to third place on the grid. It was followed by Jacques Laffite , Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet.

Brian Henton succeeded in tenth attempt as the first driver to qualify for a Grand Prix with a Toleman .

run

With a sensational start Didier Pironi reached the first chicane in fourth behind Prost, Reutemann and Arnoux. During the first lap he fought his way up to second place, but was ousted from this position again on the fifth lap by Arnoux and shortly afterwards fell behind Laffite, who had previously overtaken Jones, Piquet and Reutemann. Meanwhile, Gilles Villeneuve had caught up with the leading group, but retired on lap seven with damage to the turbocharger . Due to a puncture, Laffite initially fell behind. When it started to rain shortly afterwards, he was eliminated, as were four other opponents who were surprised by the onset of the shower.

The two Renaults were clearly ahead of the two Williams when Arnoux briefly went off the track in the Parabolica and left Prost alone in the lead.

A serious accident occurred on lap 20 when John Watson lost control of his McLaren MP4 / 1 in the Lesmo corners and hit the guardrails so hard that the engine was ripped out of the car. While Watson escaped unharmed, Tyrrell driver Michele Alboreto , who was three laps back, had an accident while trying to avoid the engine that was lying on the track.

Bruno Giacomelli , who was in third place, retired on lap 16 with a gearbox failure and had to let Piquet finish on the podium. However, its engine failed on the last lap. Due to the distance covered, he was classified sixth behind Prost, Jones, Reutemann, de Angelis and Pironi. Reutemann gained three points lead in the World Cup table.
