The 1970 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 6th and was the tenth race of the 1970 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
After Team Tyrrell had always competed as a March customer team in previous races of the season , the first use of the in-house construction Tyrrell 001 was eagerly awaited at a world championship run after the vehicle had been in the non-World Championship race in Oulton Park two weeks earlier had achieved promising results. The team registered one of the new cars for Jackie Stewart . After a few mechanical problems in the first training session, however, it was switched back to the fully developed March 701 for the following training units and for the race .
Since the top speed was more important than the cornering speeds on the high-speed track at Monza, at least in practice some drivers drove without the usual front and rear wings on their vehicles, including Jackie Stewart , Jochen Rindt and Denis Hulme .
training
Ferrari confirmed the excellent result of the Austrian GP in the first practice session , with Jacky Ickx setting the fastest time. During his first deployment in the Lotus 72, Emerson Fittipaldi came off the track at high speed in the Parabolica area , slid over an earth wall and came to a stop between trees on the edge of the track. Fortunately, since he didn't touch any of the trees, he was unharmed.
The following day, Jochen Rindt, who was the leader in the World Championship, came off the track at an almost identical point during the final training session. After a brake shaft had probably broken in the braking zone, his car pulled abruptly to the left, hit the crash barriers there and was badly damaged. Rindt was rescued by the marshals and taken away in an ambulance, but succumbed to his serious injuries on the way to the hospital. Lotus then withdrew the three remaining cars from the race weekend. After Bruce McLaren and Piers Courage , Rindt was the third regular driver of the 1970 season to die that year.
The training continued, but Jacky Ickx's best time was no longer undercut, so Ickx shared the front row with his teammate Clay Regazzoni and BRM driver Pedro Rodríguez .
run
First, Jacky Ickx was able to use his pole position to take the lead. However, he was overtaken by both Rodríguez and Stewart on the fourth lap. Regazzoni was also part of the leading group and was finally able to take the top position for the first time in lap 10. Due to slipstream duels on the long straights, which at that time were not interrupted by chicanes, there was a change at the top almost every lap. During the entire race, the lead changed a total of 28 times between initially six different drivers, but in the second half of the race only between Regazzoni and Stewart, as the field had been severely decimated by mostly technical defects. In the end, Regazzoni saved a narrow lead over Stewart at the finish and thus came to his first Grand Prix victory.
The race was gripping and dramatic, but of course it was overshadowed by the tragic events of the previous day. The victory celebrations on the part of the Ferrari team were accordingly subdued.
Registration list
1 Jackie Stewart only drove the Tyrrell 001 with starting number 16 on the first day of training and from then on used the March 701 with starting number 18
