Reports
background
After a six-week break since the race in South Africa , 22 racing cars were entered for the second World Championship round of the season. However, only 16 vehicles were to be approved for the race, so a high number of non-qualifiers was the expected consequence.
training
Jack Brabham drove the fastest practice time and, together with Denis Hulme and Jackie Stewart, formed the front row, which at that time still consisted of three vehicles. The second row, consisting of two vehicles, was formed by Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Pedro Rodríguez . Chris Amon , Jacky Ickx and Jochen Rindt qualified for the third row. Vehicles from seven different designers were thus on the first eight starting positions.
run
On the starting lap, Jackie Oliver collided with Jacky Ickx after he had lost control of his car due to a broken suspension. Both cars immediately went up in flames. Oliver was able to save himself with one jump and was unharmed. Ickx initially had problems opening his belts and suffered minor burns as a result of this delay. Despite the relatively long extinguishing work carried out by the marshals and the fire brigade , the race continued almost unaffected. After Oliver walked back to his pit and informed his team about the reason for the accident, Rodríguez, who was in sixth position in an identical vehicle, was asked to make a pit stop in order to be able to check his suspension parts. It was then decided to take him out of the race to be on the safe side.
Jackie Stewart took the lead right from the start and never gave it up until the finish. As a driver of the Tyrrell customer team, he achieved the first Grand Prix victory for the manufacturer March , which was only taking part in its second GP. While one of the March factory drivers, Jo Siffert, was unable to qualify and Chris Amon retired due to engine failure, another driver from a privately run March made it onto the podium with Mario Andretti , thus ensuring that the new manufacturer made an overall successful appearance. Second place went to Bruce McLaren , but like Andretti he benefited from the numerous retirements during the race, in which only five drivers crossed the finish line.
