The 1979 Spanish Grand Prix took place on April 29 at the Circuito Permanente del Jarama near Madrid and was the fifth race of the 1979 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

Before the teams traveled to Spain for the fifth World Championship round of the year, Gilles Villeneuve , who had victoriously finished the previous Grand Prix in Long Beach, won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch , which is not part of the World Championship .

Lotus brought a copy of the new Type 80 to the race track for the first time , which was piloted by reigning world champion Mario Andretti , while his teammate Carlos Reutemann continued to drive the Type 79 . A similar situation arose at Renault , where the first copy of the new RS10 was assigned to the regular driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux only had the RS01 from the previous year . Only the Williams team used two copies of the new FW07 for the two works drivers Clay Regazzoni and Alan Jones this weekend .

The German Willi Kauhsen Racing Team appeared for the first time. The Italian Formula 1 debutant Gianfranco Brancatelli was hired as the driver for the in-house development Kauhsen WK .

training

For the third time in the 1979 season, the two Ligier drivers Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler occupied the front row after training. Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve shared the second row with Mario Andretti in the new Lotus. It was followed by Jody Scheckter in front of the two Brabham drivers Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann.

run

Depailler immediately took the lead in front of his team-mate Laffite and did not give it up until the end of the race. Behind the two Ligier drivers, the well-started Reutemann lined up ahead of Villeneuve.

When attempting to overtake Depailler, Laffite over-revved his engine on lap 16 due to a shift error and retired. This put Reutemann in second place ahead of Scheckter, who was overtaken by Lauda on lap 60. However, as this was canceled four laps later due to an engine failure, Scheckter came back briefly on the podium. In the 67th round, however, he was finally ousted from this position by Andretti. The Tyrrell drivers Jean-Pierre Jarier and Didier Pironi also finished the race in the points.
