report

backgrounds

After the Russian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 13 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 23 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was one point ahead of Ferrari and 79 points ahead of Red Bull .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange), P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . Since the order for the tires of each compound available to each driver had to be placed before the test drives before the season, the FIA determined in advance that each driver would be provided with seven sets of soft tires , four sets of medium and two sets of hard tires .

There were several changes to the route compared to the previous year, for example the artificial turf was removed in La Caixa , Europcar and turn 15 and replaced with additional 50 millimeter curb stones. The artificial turf was also removed from Bank de Sabadell , and the gravel bed was enlarged here instead .

The two DRS zones should remain unchanged compared to the previous year. The measuring point for the first zone was 86 meters in front of the Campsa , the zone began 40 meters after the curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight, was the safety car line, the DRS was then allowed to be activated 157 meters after the New Holland . After the first two free practice sessions, the FIA decided to move the activation point of the DRS zone on the start-finish straight 100 meters forward and thus enlarge it.

Jolyon Palmer (seven), Vettel (six), Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen , Carlos Sainz jr. (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez (three each), Bottas, Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen , (two each), Stoffel Vandoorne and Max Verstappen (one at a time) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso (twice each), Massa, Vettel, Hamilton and Verstappen (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Steve Chopping (AUS), Garry Connelly (AUS), David Domingo (ESP) and Tom Kristensen (DEN) acted as race stewards .

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest lap time in 1: 21.521 minutes ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen.

In the second free practice session, Hamilton also set the fastest time in 1: 20.802 minutes, followed again by Bottas and Raikkonen.

In the third free practice, Raikkonen was fastest in 1: 20.214 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Kwjat, Vandoorne, Lance Stroll , Palmer and Ericsson were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was again fastest. Wehrlein, the Haas pilots, Hülkenberg and Sainz were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 19.149 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was the 64th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship.

After qualifying for the use of the fifth control electronics and the fifth energy storage device, Vandoorne was relegated ten starting positions this season.

run

At the start, Vettel overtook Hamilton, followed by Bottas, Räikkönen and Verstappen driving side by side into the first corner. The vehicles of Bottas and Räikkönen touched, who lost control of his Ferrari and collided with Verstappen; the suspension broke on both cars. Before the second corner, Raikkonen and Verstappen came back on the track, so Massa dodged to the outside, where he in turn collided with Alonso, who then had to drive through the gravel bed. While Bottas continued in third place, the race was over for Raikkonen and Verstappen. Alonso fell back several positions because of the drive through the gravel bed, Massa suffered a puncture and pitted at the end of the first lap to change tires. Kvjat also had to change tires due to damage.

Vettel thus led ahead of Hamilton, Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo , Pérez, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Magnussen, Sainz and Grosjean. Sainz was faster than Magnussen and attacked him, but he couldn't get past. At the top, Vettel did not manage to break away from Hamilton. Bottas and Ricciardo could not keep up with the pace at the front and were already 10 and 16 seconds behind after ten laps.

On lap 13, Magnussen and Sainz pitted to change tires, Magnussen stayed just ahead of Sainz, who tried to overtake Magnussen in the pit exit. In doing so, however, he got onto the green strip next to the track and stayed behind Magnussen. One lap later, Vettel switched to Soft , he dropped to fourth place immediately behind Ricciardo, whom he overtook one lap later. As a result, he drove more than a second faster than Hamilton. In lap 17 Pérez, Ocon and Grosjean switched to soft again , Hamilton switched to medium in lap 21 . Vettel had meanwhile caught up with Bottas, who was now in the lead, and put him under pressure. Bottas defended himself until the 25th lap, but then had to let Vettel pass. One lap later, Hamilton also passed Bottas, who also switched to medium at the end of the lap .

On lap 32 Vandoorne collided with Massa, Vandoorne's wheel suspension broke and he parked the vehicle in the run-off zone. A virtual safety car phase was called to rescue the car , which many pilots used to change tires. Wehrlein, who was in seventh place and had not yet been to the pits, was the first driver to pits. However, since he had already passed the actual pit entrance, which was marked by a traffic cone , the race stewards gave him a five-second time penalty and he also received two penalty points. Vandoorne also received two penalty points for causing the collision with Massa and a starting place penalty of three places for the Monaco Grand Prix . In addition to Wehrlein, Hülkenberg, Magnussen and Kwjat and a lap later Pérez, Ocon, Sainz and Grosjean also changed tires, all of them switched to medium .

Vettel led ahead of Hamilton, Bottas, Ricciardo, Pérez, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Wehrlein, Sainz and Magnussen. When the track was opened again at the end of the 36th lap, Hamilton, who was eight seconds behind Vettel, switched to soft . Vettel responded a lap later and switched to medium . He came back onto the track next to Hamilton and defended his position, with the vehicles touching lightly. In midfield, Sainz attacked Wehrlein several times, but he defended himself against the attacks.

Bottas retired on lap 39 due to a technical defect in the turbocharger . Hamilton put Vettel under pressure, but he defended himself for several laps. On lap 43, Hamilton drove the fastest lap of the race to date and passed Vettel on the start-finish straight. He then expanded the lead to more than three seconds, Vettel no longer came within striking distance to start another attack on Hamilton. On lap 64, Hamilton drove the fastest lap of the race, and at the same time there was a collision between Magnussen and Kwjat. Magnussen suffered a tire damage and had to pit to change tires, so he fell out of the points.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo. It was the 55th win for Hamilton and the 67th win for Mercedes in the Formula 1 World Championship. For Ricciardo it was the first podium finish since the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix . The remaining points were placed by the already lapped Pérez, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Sainz, Wehrlein, who fell behind Sainz because of his five-second time penalty, Kwjat and Grosjean. For Ocon and Wehrlein it was the best result in the Formula 1 World Championship to date, and Wehrlein also scored his first points for Sauber.

In the drivers' championship, Hamilton reduced his gap to Vettel to six points, with Bottas remaining third. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
