Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Bottas was the fastest. The Toro Rosso and Sauber drivers as well as Grosjean were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Stroll, Magnussen, the McLaren drivers and Sainz were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a lap time of 1: 36.231 minutes, Bottas set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the fourth pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship.

run

At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. Magnussen braked himself in the first corner and left the track. After pulling back onto the track, he drove next to Stroll and spun around on turn three . He fell back to the end of the field. Sergio Pérez overtook Hülkenberg on the first lap, who attacked Pérez again as he approached turn eleven . Pérez defended himself, Hülkenberg left the track, shortened the approach to turn 13 and thus passed Pérez. Since he did not let Pérez pass again afterwards, the race management imposed a five-second penalty on Hülkenberg. He also received two penalty points.

At the end of the first lap, Bottas was leading in front of Hamilton, Vettel, Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Verstappen, Hülkenberg, Pérez, Esteban Ocon and Felipe Massa .

In the following laps the field spread apart and there were no overtaking maneuvers. On lap 14, Verstappen was the first driver from the front half of the field to go to the pits to change tires and switch to Supersoft . Pérez followed two laps later.

Hulkenberg changed tires on the 18th lap and served his time penalty. Although there was a problem changing the right rear tire afterwards, he stayed ahead of Pérez, who he was more than seven seconds away from before the pit stops.

Vettel also switched to Supersoft in the 20th round . Ricciardo parked his Red Bull at the edge of the track with a hydraulic fault, after having touched the boundary of the track shortly before due to a sudden lack of power assistance from his steering. One lap later, Bottas and Fernando Alonso switched to Supersoft , and on lap 22 Massa too. Alonso passed Massa shortly afterwards.

Hamilton drove several fast laps in a row and switched to Supersoft on lap 24 , he came back on the track just behind Bottas and put him under pressure. However, he did not manage to get so close to Bottas in the following laps that he could launch an attack. On lap 31, Ocon and Sainz switched to Supersoft , and the left front wheel on Sainz was not properly attached. Sainz parked the vehicle on the edge of the track shortly after exiting the pit lane, so he retired. One lap later, Grosjean, the last driver to switch from Ultrasoft to Supersoft .

In the following lap there were no shifts in position, and the distances between the pilots also remained constant. Only in the lower midfield there were fights for position between Magnussen, Wehrlein and Hartley, but the order did not change.

Exit round (Bottas, Hamilton, Vettel)

Bottas made a driving error on lap 49, so that Hamilton caught up again. However, there was no attack, and Bottas set the fastest lap of the race several times, increasing the lead over Hamilton to five seconds. Vettel was already 20 seconds behind Hamilton, Raikkonen was another 20 seconds behind. Verstappen followed, only two seconds behind, but never got into a position that would have allowed him to attack Raikkonen.

Bottas won the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the third victory for Bottas this season and in the Formula 1 World Championship at all. Hamilton and Vettel achieved their 13th podium finish each season. Hamilton was also the only driver on the grid to finish in the top ten in each of the 20 grands prix this season. The remaining points were taken by Raikkonen, Verstappen, Hülkenberg, Pérez, Ocon, Alonso and Massa.

In the drivers' standings, Raikkonen overtook Ricciardo with his fourth place and was fourth in the overall standings. In the constructors' championship overtook Renault nor Toro Rosso and thus finished sixth.
