Robert Wickens took over the Virgin from Jérôme D'Ambrosio in this training session and made his debut on a Formula 1 weekend. Moreover returned Romain Grosjean in this training in the Renault of Bruno Senna back in F1. His last participation in a Grand Prix weekend was on this track two years earlier, when he started the race. In addition, Jean-Éric Vergne received the Toro Rosso from Sébastien Buemi in the first free practice . In the second free practice, Hamilton drove the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Button and Alonso. In the third free practice, Hamilton again achieved the fastest time. Vettel and Webber followed in second and third place.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton set the fastest time. Rubens Barrichello did not set any time and therefore failed to qualify. He was subsequently admitted to the start.
