After the Brazilian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with twelve points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 121 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Thus, regardless of Hamilton's race result, third place was enough for Rosberg to win his first world title. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led unmatchable with 276 points ahead of Red Bull and with 347 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions Available.

There were minor changes to the route compared to the previous year: all 18 bollards were replaced, and additional, removable curbs were added in turn one . In addition, Tecpro barriers were installed in front of the guardrail in curve 21 .

There were two DRS zones on the course that were unchanged from last year. The first zone begins 390 meters after curve seven , the measuring point was 40 meters before the curve. The second measuring point was 50 meters after turn nine , the DRS zone began at the apex of turn ten .

Daniil Kwjat (eight), Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel (six each), Esteban Gutiérrez (five), Felipe Nasr , Esteban Ocon , Max Verstappen , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen (three each), Fernando Alonso , Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Felipe Massa , Nico Hülkenberg , Jolyon Palmer (two each) and Carlos Sainz jr. (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Vettel (three times), Hamilton (twice), Raikkonen and Rosberg (once each) all four previous winners competed in this race.

Mahir Al Badri (ARE), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Andrew Mallalieu (BRB) acted as race commissioners . Due to "extraordinary circumstances" Gutjahr was replaced at short notice on November 25, 2016 by Silvia Bellot (ESP) and on the two remaining days of the race weekend by Gerd Ennser (DEU).

In this race, Massa contested the 250th Grand Prix of his career in the Formula 1 World Championship. For Jenson Button , who ended his career as a regular McLaren-Honda driver after this race , it was the 305th Grand Prix. After the race, Rosberg also announced the end of his career in the Formula 1 World Championship, for him it was the 206th Grand Prix.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The Sauber and Toro Rosso drivers, Ocon and Magnussen were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest here too. Ricciardo and Verstappen drove their fastest lap on the supersoft compound, so they are allowed to use it at the start. Wehrlein, Palmer, the Haas drivers, Button and Bottas were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 38.755 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo. It was the 61st pole position for Hamilton, the twelfth of which of the season.

run

Lewis Hamilton kept the lead from Nico Rosberg after the start of the race. Kimi Raikkonen overtook Daniel Ricciardo and was third, followed by Vettel, Pérez, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Massa and Bottas. At the start, Nico Hülkenberg and Max Verstappen collided, with Verstappen falling back to 19th place. Hamilton and Raikkonen began their first pit stops on lap seven. Rosberg and Vettel followed a lap later. Rosberg came out ahead of Raikkonen, but was behind Verstappen, who did not stop yet. On lap 20 he finally overtook Max Verstappen, who was also overtaken by Kimi Raikkönen five laps later. The Mercedes drivers pitted on laps 28 and 29 and switched to the soft tires. After Verstappen was also in the pits, Rosberg's lead was four seconds. Vettel drove a longer stint until he also pitted on lap 35 and got the red super-soft tires, dropping back to sixth place. On fresh tires, Vettel drove the fastest race lap on lap 43, his 28th in his career. Hamilton slowed down his pace significantly. Rosberg and the chasing group caught up. Although Vettel still overtook Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Verstappen, he was no longer able to attack Rosberg.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. It was the tenth win of the season and the 53rd victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. Rosberg achieved the 16th podium finish of the season, so Mercedes achieved a double victory for the seventh time in 2016. For Vettel it was the seventh podium of the season and the first since the 2016 Italian Grand Prix . Verstappen, Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Hülkenberg, Pérez, Massa and Alonso achieved the remaining points.

In this race, Rosberg won his first and so far only driver's title in the Formula 1 World Championship ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo.
