At the German Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
Daniil Kwjat (seven), Max Verstappen (six), Räikkönen (five), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Esteban Gutiérrez , Rio Haryanto , Nico Hülkenberg , Felipe Nasr , Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Fernando Alonso , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Jolyon Palmer , Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Alonso (three times), Hamilton (twice), Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Alonso won three times at the Hockenheimring, Hamilton and Rosberg once each.
Ricciardo contested his 100th Grand Prix in the Formula 1 World Championship.
The race commissioners were José Abed (MEX), Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA), Paul Gutjahr (CHE) and Achim Loth (DEU).
Before the race, the restrictions on radio traffic that have been in effect since this season were lifted. Jenson Button and Rosberg had received fines in the previous two races for having been given instructions over the radio by the engineers, which the race stewards deemed unauthorized assistance .
training
In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 15.517 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.
In the second free practice, Rosberg again set the fastest time, this time in 1: 15.614 minutes. Second fastest was again Hamilton ahead of Vettel. Button parked his McLaren in the pits about halfway through practice, complaining of pain in his left eye. After an examination in the medical center of the route, a carbon fragment was removed from his left eye in a hospital in Mannheim .
In the third free practice session too, Rosberg was fastest with a lap time of 1: 15.738 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. Hamilton left his pits sim training when Grosjean approached in the pit lane. Grosjean had to stop his vehicle to avoid a collision. The race stewards issued a fine of 10,000 euros against the Mercedes team, Hamilton was not punished. A little later, Grosjean spun because of a gearbox damage, the gearbox had to be changed.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest, just like his team-mate Rosberg, he set his fast lap on the soft - rather than the super soft mixture. The Sauber and Manor pilots, Kwjat and Kevin Magnussen were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. All pilots started on intermediates, but switched to the supersoft mix shortly before the end of the section . Hamilton was again fastest. Palmer, the Haas and McLaren drivers, and Carlos Sainz Jr. dropped out.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg broke off his first attempt with an electronics problem, but in the second attempt drove the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 14.363 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. It was the 27th pole position for Rosberg.
Grosjean received a starting place penalty of five places because his gearbox was changed prematurely after the third free practice session. Sainz was relocated three places on the grid because he obstructed Felipe Massa on his fast lap. He also received two penalty points. Hülkenberg also received a starting place penalty. He was moved one place back because he used a set of tires in qualifying that, according to the team's electronic message, he should have returned to tire supplier Pirelli after free practice.
run
Rosberg did not start well and fell back to fourth place behind Hamilton and both Red Bull drivers. Verstappen overtook Ricciardo in the first corner. Behind it, Vettel passed Raikkonen. Palmer braked himself in front of the Parabolika driveway and pulled a brake plate on himself . In the hairpin , there was a collision between him and Massa, as Palmer misjudged the distance to Massas Williams because of the resulting vibrations. Palmer pitted at the end of the second lap to change tires. Hamilton led ahead of Verstappen, Ricciardo, Rosberg, Vettel, Raikkonen, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Button and Massa.
Alonso overtook Massa on the sixth lap and there was a collision between Wehrlein and Haryanto in the rear field. Rosberg and Verstappen were the first pilots in the leading group to pit in the eleventh lap and again switched to Supersoft . Both fell behind Button, Verstappen overtook him shortly afterwards. A lap later Ricciardo and Bottas changed tires, both were now driving soft . Ricciardo came back on the track between Verstappen and Button. Another lap later Vettel and Button stopped, another lap later Hamilton, Raikkonen and Alonso stopped. These drivers now also drove the soft mix. The two Haas drivers had not yet changed their tires at this point and were initially in the top ten, but were quickly overtaken by the rivals with the fresh tires. At this point, Rosberg drove the fastest lap so far.
Massa lost further positions, he had to let Magnussen, Sainz and Grosjean, who had been in the pits in the meantime, pass in quick succession. Palmer pitted on lap 26 and changed not only the tires but also the front wing, which he had damaged in the collision with Massa on the first lap. Rosberg switched to Soft one lap later , as did Verstappen in the 28th lap. Rosberg overtook Verstappen shortly afterwards, but pushed him off the track in the hairpin . The race stewards pronounced a five-second penalty against Rosberg for this, and he also received two penalty points.
On the 31st lap, Vettel switched to Supersoft and fell behind Bottas, whom he overtook shortly afterwards. Another lap later, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg stopped, both then also drove on Supersoft . Next, Raikkonen, Hamilton and Bottas changed tires, with Bottas being the only driver to pull on Soft . Ricciardo was significantly faster than Verstappen at this point and caught up with him, on lap 40 Verstappen let him pass without a fight. Massa had recently given up the race with his damaged vehicle.
On the 44th lap, Rosberg and Hülkenberg, the first pilots came to the pits for their third tire change. At Mercedes, due to a problem with the stopwatch, the team waited more than eight seconds instead of five seconds before work on Rosberg's car began. In the following three laps, first Verstappen, then Ricciardo, Vettel and Button and then Hamilton, Raikkonen and Alonso changed tires. The Red Bull drivers switched to Supersoft and drove the fastest laps of the race shortly after the pit stop.
Bottas, who had not been in the pits after changing tires on lap 33, drove significantly slower than the drivers behind him. So Hülkenberg caught up and overtook Bottas on lap 62, four laps later Button also passed Bottas. A few raindrops fell on the final laps of the race, but they did not affect the race. The Super Soft tires the Red Bull drivers eased in the last few laps, so Rosberg caught up. However, he was no longer within striking distance. Shortly before the end of the race, Pérez passed Alonso and took tenth place.
Hamilton won the race ahead of Ricciardo and Verstappen. It was the 49th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. For the first time since the 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix , both Red Bull drivers were on the podium. The remaining points were placed by Rosberg, Vettel, Raikkonen, Hülkenberg, Button, Bottas and Pérez.
In the overall standings Hamilton extended the lead from Rosberg to 19 points, Ricciardo remained third. With the constructors, Mercedes was still in the lead with a large margin, Red Bull overtook Ferrari and was now in second place.
