Reports
background
After a good performance at the British Grand Prix , Arturo Merzario was able to contest another Grand Prix for Ferrari despite the return of regular driver Clay Regazzoni, who had recovered from his broken arm . This was also helped by the fact that the actual third works driver of the team, Mario Andretti , as well as his compatriot Peter Revson, who is under contract with McLaren , was absent because of a USAC race taking place at the same time. Revson's representation took over again Brian Redman .
As Henri Pescarolo had badly damaged the new Politoys FX3 when it was first used in the British Grand Prix, Frank Williams Racing Cars competed as before as a pure March customer team.
At BRM the constant driver changes continued this season, so this time Peter Gethin and Jackie Oliver had to forego participation in favor of Reine Wisell and Howden Ganley .
training
The training already gave the first signs of an impending dominance of the Nordschleife specialist Jacky Ickx , as he undercut the lap time set by Jackie Stewart last year by 12 seconds and thus secured pole position. Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi also stayed below 7:10 each. Ronnie Peterson and François Cevert completed the first five starting positions.
run
Ickx converted his pole position into a lead that he never gave up until the finish. During the race he improved the best time set by Cevert in 1971 for the fastest race lap by around seven seconds to 7: 13.6 minutes, while Stewart and Peterson fought wheel to wheel for second place in the first laps.
The private driver Dave Charlton had to give up the race after four laps due to illness.
Fittipaldi, who had initially fallen behind Peterson and Regazzoni, caught up strongly and was able to overtake Regazzoni on the second lap. In the fifth round he also succeeded in doing this with Peterson. This spun in the ninth lap and fell behind Regazzoni. Shortly thereafter, smoke came out of the transmission of the Lotus 72 from Fittipaldi, whereupon the leading driver in the world championship had to give up the race.
Shortly before the end, Regazzoni was just ahead of Stewart in second place behind Ickx. On the last lap, Stewart attempted an overtaking maneuver in the area of the Hatzenbach section in order to preserve his World Championship chances after Fittipaldi's failure. The two collided, causing Stewart to hit the guardrails and unable to finish the race. Due to the distance he had covered, however, he was classified eleventh. Regazzoni was able to continue and ensure a Ferrari double victory. Peterson managed the March works team's only podium this season.
Jacky Ickx reached the first and only Grand Slam of his Formula 1 career by achieving both the pole position and the fastest race lap and also leading the race from the first to the last lap. However, over the course of his seven other years in Formula 1, it turned out that this was also his last Grand Prix victory.
