The 1972 Automobile World Championship was the 23rd season of the Automobile World Championship, now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over twelve races from January 23, 1972 to October 8, 1972, the drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held.
Emerson Fittipaldi won the drivers' championship for the first time. Lotus-Ford became constructors' world champion for the fifth time.
The FIA European Grand Prix title was awarded to the Great Britain Grand Prix in 1972 .
