The 2005 Formula 1 World Championship was the 56th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 19 races from March 6th to October 16th.

For the first time Fernando Alonso World Champion. He was the first Spanish Formula 1 world champion and at the age of 24 the youngest title holder in history until the record was broken in 2008 by Lewis Hamilton (and then in 2010 by Sebastian Vettel ).

The Renault team of team boss Flavio Briatore also won the constructors' championship besides the world title in the championship. This was the first design engineer title for the Renault team, which has been racing again since 2002.

Changes in 2005

Regulations

The first six races of the 2005 season took place with changed qualifying rules. The starting positions were determined in two rounds, each with a qualifying round. The first round took place on Saturday afternoon, the second on Sunday morning. After the Saturday qualifying, the racing cars were allowed to be refueled, the Sunday qualifying had to be driven with the amount of fuel intended for the race. On May 24, 2005, after a meeting of the team bosses with FIA President Max Mosley, Formula 1 returned to the 2004 rule with a single qualifying lap on Saturday.

The most serious rule change was introduced with regard to racing tires : tire changes were prohibited this season, i. H. each driver had to drive both qualifying laps and the race with a single set of tires. Tire changes were only permitted in the event of flat tires and wet weather.

After it was introduced last season that every engine had to last an entire race weekend, this rule was tightened this season: now every engine is to be used over two race weekends. If an engine has to be replaced before qualifying due to a defect, the driver receives a penalty in the form of a 10 starting position deterioration. If the engine has to be replaced during or after qualifying, the driver will be transferred to the end of the starting field as a penalty.

In order to create better conditions for overtaking, the regulations for aerodynamics have been changed. The size and placement of the front and rear wings, specifications for the height of the nose and other rules were changed.

driver

Only seven drivers drove for the same team as in the previous season: Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Jenson Button, Takuma Sato, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. With Christijan Albers, Tiago Monteiro, Patrick Friesacher and Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian Formula 1 driver, there were four new drivers. Jacques Villeneuve also returned to Formula 1 after an absence of about a year.

Teams

The Austrian entrepreneur and billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz took over the former Jaguar Racing Team and formed the new Red Bull Racing team from it. The new team started with a British license, just like Jaguar before. The team Jordan Grand Prix was taken over by the Midland Group , but started this season under the name Jordan. Jordan started using Toyota engines in 2005. Sauber switched the tire supplier from Bridgestone to Michelin. After the USA Grand Prix, Peter Sauber sold the majority of the team to BMW, so that the BMW-Sauber team was formed in the following season.

The race was therefore contested by only six drivers. The teams' attempt to defuse the route or to use new tires specially flown in by Michelin failed in advance, as both the FIA and Ferrari, as the Bridgestone team, did not agree to a change in the route and the FIA a change the tire would have imposed a penalty in accordance with the regulations. The suggestion that the Michelin teams should avoid the curve by driving through the pit lane was also rejected by the Michelin teams.

8th Ralf Schumacher Toyota + 1 lap

The Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo took place on September 25, 2005 and covered a distance of 71 laps (305.909 km).

With his third place in this 17th of 19 races of the season, Fernando Alonso secured the driver's title early in the Renault . At the age of 24, Alonso was the youngest Formula 1 world champion and the first Spaniard to win this title.

On Saturday Alonso had reached pole position ahead of Montoya and Fisichella. Even the double victory of the McLaren-Mercedes drivers Montoya in front of Raikkonen could no longer prevent Alonso from winning the world championship.

Immediately after the start there was a safety car phase because of an accident between Williams-BMW drivers Pizzonia and Webber and Coulthard. Webber was able to continue the race after 25 laps. The race was over for Pizzonia and Coulthard. With Doornbos and Monteiro there were two more failures. Raikkonen set the fastest lap time of 1: 12.268 minutes.

The Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka took place on October 9, 2005 and covered a distance of 53 laps (307.573 km).

Ralf Schumacher achieved pole position ahead of Button and Fisichella in a qualifying that was influenced by rain.

In the race, Raikkonen was able to overtake Fisichella on the last lap and thus celebrate his 7th win of the season, although he only started 17th. The fastest lap was also Räikkönen with 1: 31.540 minutes.

In the 10th round Satō caused an accident with Trulli, which was eliminated. Satō was able to continue, but was later disqualified. Montoya and Pizzonia didn't finish the race either.

Oddly enough, Michael Schumacher had to let the Renault driver Fernando Alonso go outside when Alonso and Raikkonen were close to Schumacher. That last happened in 1996 in Estoril with Jacques Villeneuve.

The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai took place on October 16, 2005 and covered a distance of 56 laps (305.256 km).

Alonso achieved pole position ahead of Fisichella and Raikkonen. Räikkönen drove the fastest race lap with a time of 1: 33.242 minutes.

Alonso was able to conclude his successful season with another victory, which also brought Renault the constructors' championship title.

The race was eventful with two safety car phases due to accidents. There was already an accident between Michael Schumacher and Albers during the warm-up lap. Both cars were destroyed, so that the two drivers had to start out of the pit lane with the replacement car. Michael Schumacher later retired after slipping off the racetrack. There were further failures from Satō, Karthikeyan and Montoya.
