The 1976 Automobile World Championship was the 27th season of the Automobile World Championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over 16 races from January 25, 1976 to October 24, 1976, the drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held.

James Hunt won the Drivers' Championship for the first and only time. Ferrari became world constructors champions for the fourth time.

The FIA -Ehrentitel Grand Prix of Europe was at the 1976 Grand Prix of the Netherlands awarded.

At the tenth race of the season at the Nürburgring , the sovereign leading, reigning world champion Niki Lauda had a serious accident and suffered severe burns. Lauda had to pause two races and was racing again just six weeks after his accident. Before the last race in Japan, Lauda was three points ahead of Hunt. But since Lauda, like some other colleagues, stopped the race immediately after the start for safety reasons due to the adverse conditions in heavy rain and thick fog, Hunt was enough to overtake Lauda with one point and win the world title.

In addition to the British factory teams and Scuderia Ferrari, some private teams competed. A total of 16 drivers were registered. The private teams included the Italian Scuderia Everest , the forerunner of the later Minardi team, which reported a private Ferrari for the first time in Formula 1 history. The driver was Giancarlo Martini . He qualified for the penultimate starting position, seven seconds behind, but did not start the race because he damaged the Ferrari 312T in an accident on the warm-up lap . The race was won by later world champion James Hunt.

Individual evidence

  1. Hans Binder competed in the Japanese Grand Prix for Wolf. The team initially reported Masami Kuwashima, who also took part in Friday training. After Kuwashima's sponsor had withdrawn at short notice, Kuwashima was replaced by Binder before qualifying.
