Otto Stuppacher (born March 3, 1947 in Vienna ; † August 13, 2001 there ) was an Austrian racing driver . He competed in three Grand Prix races in 1976, but did not qualify in any run.

The beginning of the career

Stuppacher only started active motorsport at the age of 22. From 1969 he competed sporadically mountain races and international sports car races , but achieved no major successes.

In Formula 1

Without the necessary driving practice or experience, Stuppacher, together with his compatriot Karl Oppitzhauser , was entered by the Austrian racing team ÖASC Racing for the 1976 Grand Prix of Austria . Opitzhauser was supposed to drive a March 761 Cosworth , Stuppacher a Tyrrell 007 Cosworth. The organizer declined both entries because he thought the pilots were too inexperienced. Stuppacher, who did not want to come to terms with this, tried to organize a signature campaign in the paddock to get his participation. The action failed because none of the drivers and those responsible knew Stuppacher better.

At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza , ÖASC Racing and Stuppacher tried again. This time he was approved by the organizers, but failed because of the qualification. Stuppacher lost over 13 seconds to pole position in practice , and even the last place on the grid was almost eight seconds away. Nevertheless, the Austrian almost came to his first Formula 1 race. After training the two were McLaren pilots Jochen Mass and James Hunt and the Penske -Fahrer John Watson denied the times because of irregular gasoline. Stuppacher could have moved up for the race. But the Austrian had already left for Vienna on Saturday after training and was unable to return to Monza in time for the start.

Despite the previous failures, ÖASC and Stuppacher reached deep into their pockets to compete in the next races in Canada and the USA . In Mosport , Canada , Stuppacher again lost more than twelve seconds on the best time in training and was unable to qualify. Some pilots tried unsuccessfully to influence Stuppacher and the organizer during the training runs to voluntarily give up or exclude Stuppacher, as they saw in him a danger for other pilots.

As expected, the farce continued at Watkins Glen . This time Stuppacher lost over 27 seconds on the best time in training. Of course, this was not enough for qualification either.

Stuppacher then wisely decided not to end the season in Fuji .

Stuppacher was registered for three Formula 1 Grand Prix, but did not take part in any races.

According to Formula 1

After 1976, neither the ÖASC Racing Team nor Stuppacher continued to actively participate in car races. On August 13, 2001 Otto Stuppacher was found dead in his apartment in Vienna. He was buried at the Hernals cemetery .

Quote about Otto Stuppacher

  • "It is a pity. Stuppacher could have stopped Hunt for me. Austria's thanks would have been certain to him. " (Niki Lauda on Stuppacher's non-qualification in Mosport)

Individual evidence

  1. Since Arturo Merzario , who was driving for Walter Wolf Racing and who had also slipped into the starting grid, surprisingly withdrew his report, Mass, Hunt and Watson were finally allowed to start again, but started the race from the end of the field. For this and the rumor that Merzario had been persuaded to withdraw his report by financial donations from Penske, see. the note at www.f1rejects.com ( memento of the original from October 14, 2007 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link was inserted automatically and has not yet been checked.
