Already in the qualifying practice the competition behind the Alfa Romeo was striking. Derek Bell set the fastest lap time of 3: 20.400 minutes. The best non-Alfa-Romeo was the Porsche 908/3 of Herbert Müller and Leo Kinnunen , who was slower by 16 seconds. In the Porsche team of Dr. Hermann Dannesberger had a driver change. After a dispute with Herbert Müller, Gijs van Lennep had to leave the team after the 1000 km race in Monza . Leo Kinnunen became Müller's new team partner.

As heavy rain and strong gusts of wind were expected on race day, the organizer shortened the distance from 1000 to 750 kilometers. The overall standings were won by Henri Pescarolo and Derek Bell, ahead of their teammates Jacky Ickx and Arturo Merzario .
