Richard Andrew Robarts (born September 22, 1944 in Bicknacre , Essex ) is a retired British racing car driver .

The beginning of the career

Robarts only started active motorsport at the age of 25. He competed in the British Formula Ford championship from 1969, but was not able to achieve his first victory until 1972. In the following year Robarts switched to the Lombard North Formula 3 series and won it together with the Englishman Tony Brise with the same number of points .

In Formula 1

For the 1974 Formula 1 World Championship , Robarts bought himself into Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team. After three races, in which Robarts could only achieve moderate results, he was replaced by Rikky from Opel , who had a larger budget than Robarts.

At the Swedish Grand Prix Robarts was registered as a driver for Frank Williams' team with an Iso-Marlboro FW02 . Shortly before the start of timed practice, however, the team decided to entrust the car to the Danish Tom Belsø . Belso had already contested two races for Williams and at short notice secured the financing of his assignment.

Other races

Between 1975 and 1977 Robarts competed in numerous races in sports cars , touring cars and in the Formula 2 European Championship. After a serious accident in 1976 in a Formula 2 race in Vallelunga , Italy , Robarts only started sporadically in car races. In 1978 he ended his career with a guest start in the Porsche 924 Cup.

This and that

At the 1974 South African Grand Prix , Robarts complained to Bernie Ecclestone about what he believed to be a lack of publicity at Brabham . Ecclestone responded in his own way. He had Robarts' name written in giant letters on the side of the Brabham. After completing the training, Robarts was able to get Ecclestone to remove the unusual paintwork.
