Reports
background
Two weeks after the Swede Ronnie Peterson won the Monaco Grand Prix , Formula 1 competed in the second World Championship Grand Prix in his home country.
Because the number of participants was limited by the organizer, the entry list comprised 27 vehicles. Hans-Joachim Stuck was absent due to an injury and was represented by Reine Wisell in the March factory . Since Brian Redman had ended his Formula 1 career and the second Shadow cockpit next to Jean-Pierre Jarier had to be filled, a third Swede, Bertil Roos, started. It was the first and only Grand Prix participation for him.
Arturo Merzario started training with a broken finger that he had suffered during a sports car race in Imola the previous weekend . When he realized that this injury was hindering him too much, he first gave his car to Richard Robarts . However, after training, he had to hand the vehicle over to Tom Belsø , who was better placed on the grid and who had damaged his own emergency vehicle.
The BRM team did not manage to repair all three works cars in time for the Swedish GP, so only two cars were available and François Migault, the third works driver, was left behind.
training
The two Tyrrell drivers achieved the two places on the front row thanks to their training performance, with Patrick Depailler achieving the first and only pole position of his Grand Prix career. Behind his teammate Jody Scheckter , the two Ferrari 312B3s owned by Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni formed the second row of the grid. This was followed by Lotus pilot Ronnie Peterson ahead of James Hunt and Jacky Ickx in the second Lotus 72E , which was still preferred to the newer Type 76 due to its better reliability .
Jean-Pierre Jarier as well as the world championship leader Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Reutemann completed the top ten.
run
Scheckter took the lead from second on the grid, while Depailler, who started from pole position, was overtaken by Peterson. Lauda, Regazzoni and Reutemann followed. This order remained constant until the ninth lap. Then Peterson dropped out because of a damage to the driveshaft, thereby enabling a Tyrrell double guide.
When Regazzoni retired on lap 24 due to a gearbox failure, Hunt, who had previously overtaken Reutemann, took fourth place behind the two Tyrrell and Lauda. Reutemann retired on lap 31 due to an oil leak, so that the two McLaren drivers Fittipaldi and Denis Hulme achieved the points. For Hulme, however, this condition only lasted until the 57th lap, when he failed due to a suspension damage. Vittorio Brambilla thus came in sixth.
When Lauda got more and more technical problems in the further course of the race, Hunt managed to overtake the Austrian on lap 66 after a duel lasting around 20 laps. A few laps later, this was finally eliminated due to a gearbox damage.
Hunt could keep up with the two Tyrrell in the lead, but couldn't find a way past them. Thus Jody Scheckter secured the first Grand Prix victory of his career.
Due to Vittorio Brambilla's retirement shortly before the end of the race, Graham Hill moved up to sixth place and thus received his first championship point of the year. Brambilla was classified in tenth place because of the distance he had covered.
Ensign pilot Vern Schuppan crossed the finish line, but was disqualified after the race because he had started without a license.
The first seven World Championship rounds of the season produced six different winners. A clear favorite to win the World Cup was not yet apparent.
Registration list
1 Arturo Merzario sold the car with start number 20 to his colleague Richard Robarts during practice.
