Brambilla took the lead in front of Depailler, Jarier, Reutemann, Pace and Lauda. This order of the first six drivers only changed during the first 15 laps due to a successful overtaking maneuver by Reutemann against Jarier. Then Depailler left because of a brake defect. In the following lap the leading Brambilla, who was slowing down due to overheating tires, was overtaken by Reutemann. He then decided to make a pit stop to change the tires, which made him fall far behind. Jarier then followed behind the leading Reutemann, ahead of Pace, Lauda, Regazzoni and Andretti.
Jarier's technical failure on lap 39 resulted in a Brabham one-two lead, which ended a little later with a spin of Paces. Lauda, now in second place, who was on the road with a harder tire compound than most of the competition, caught up with Reutemann during the following laps. In the course of this, he broke the lap record several times. On lap 70 he managed to overtake the Argentine, who was now struggling with understeer . With this, the Austrian secured his third victory in a row. Behind Reutemann and Regazzoni, the two Americans Mario Andretti and Mark Donohue as well as Tony Brise achieved positions in the points. For Brise this was the first and only World Championship point in his Formula 1 career and the first point for the still young Embassy Hill works team .
