Reports

background

An essentially unchanged field of participants started two weeks after the Dutch Grand Prix for the ninth round of the season, which took place for the third time at the then ultra-modern Circuit Paul Ricard .

The only changes were that Ian Scheckter no longer competed for Frank Williams Racing Cars and was replaced by François Migault , and that Tyrrell provided a third works car for Jean-Pierre Jabouille, who was supported by the team's main sponsor, Elf . In addition, the Parnelli team was back at the start with driver Mario Andretti .

training

Niki Lauda secured pole position for the fifth time this season and relegated Jody Scheckter and the winner of the Dutch GP, James Hunt , to second and third with his best time in practice . It was followed by Shadow pilot Jean-Pierre Jarier in front of the Brabham of Carlos Pace and Tom Pryce in the second factory Shadow. Jochen Mass , Vittorio Brambilla , Clay Regazzoni and Emerson Fittipaldi completed the top ten.

run

Lauda took the lead ahead of Scheckter and Hunt. While Jarier was able to follow the top trio, his team-mate Pryce fell back to the end of the field after a bad start. Mass then took fourth place ahead of Pace and Regazzoni.

Regazzoni made up most of the places during the first laps. In the sixth lap he was already in second place behind his team-mate Lauda. On the seventh lap, however, he retired due to an engine failure.

By lap 14, both Hunt and Mass and Fittipaldi managed to overtake Scheckter, who fell back to ninth place as the race progressed. The order of the first four did not change any more. Mario Andretti was fifth and Patrick Depailler was sixth.

18 of the 25 pilots who started reached the finish, twelve of them completed the full race distance of 54 laps. There were no retirements during the second half of the race. Jochen Mass drove the fastest race lap of a Grand Prix for the first time.
