The 1987 French Grand Prix took place on July 5th at the Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Castellet and was the sixth race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

A field of participants that had remained unchanged two weeks previously compared to the US Grand Prix entered the sixth World Championship round of the year in Le Castellet.

training

For the fourth time in a row, Nigel Mansell secured pole position. Alain Prost qualified for second place on the grid ahead of Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet . Thierry Boutsen and Gerhard Berger formed the third row on the grid.

run

After the order at the front remained unchanged for the first few meters, Piquet managed to overtake Prost on the back straight and thus create a Williams double lead. Senna followed in fourth place behind Prost and ahead of Thierry Boutsen and Teo Fabi's two Benettons .

On the 19th lap, Piquet lost second place to Prost. In the course of the pit stops, however, he managed to pass both Prost and Mansell to the top.

When Piquet made a small mistake on lap 46, Mansell was able to take the lead again and win the race just ahead of his team mate. Prost was third ahead of Senna and Fabi, who, despite his technical failure shortly before the end, was classified fifth due to the distance he had covered. Philippe Streiff received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
